After a public meeting in early 1931 a “Working Committee” was formed and after arrangement with Mrs M. Angel, for the use of part of her farm, which at that time, was also being used as an aerodrome a nine-hole course was constructed. This served the Murgon Golf Club well for two years. and also provided novel hazards in the form of straying stock and aircraft.
It was through the foresight of the Committee and members that a lease was obtained from the Council and Lands Department for the present ground where the golf course is situated today. It was officially opened on the 3rd June 1933.
A 3-day carnival was held in conjunction with the opening which attracted 94 players who were served under canvas with a small shed being used as an office.
In 1934 the club purchased the old shire office from the council for 60 pounds and re-erected it at the site of the present clubhouse at a cost of 43 pounds. The official opening of the newly-erected clubhouse was held on 30th March 1935.
The club progressed steadily throughout the forties with continual improvements being made to both the clubhouse and grounds. However, it wasn’t until 1954 that the first grass green appeared.
Apart from the replacement of sand greens with grass and further clearing, particularly of the rough, the appearance of the course did not alter greatly during the fifties and sixties. A major improvement in the clubhouse, however, was the installation of a cold room, and later a glass washer.
In the late sixties and early seventies, the course underwent a marked change in profile. As the game had obviously become much too easy, it was decided that mounds should be constructed around selected greens and these became the framework for bunkers
In 1970 the first major clubhouse “extensions” were finally undertaken. The “extensions” involved an almost complete rebuilding of the clubhouse, re-location of the cold room, construction of a new bar, kitchen, etc.
For many years, members had recognized the need for fairway irrigation and in 1976 an irrigation system was installed and connected to the town water supply. The benefit of the irrigation system was immense, and coupled with several subsequent top dressings, resulted in excellently grassed fairways. During the dry season the hard large bare areas not served by irrigation were a vivid reminder of what the entire course was previously like.
Following the installation of the irrigation system, the committee began to focus its attention of the clubhouse once again. In late 1978, the first stage of further major extensions was underway involving the construction of a toilet and shower block, a new kitchen, captain’s office and meeting room. Work was completed early in 1979 and gave the Murgon Golf Club a spacious clubhouse with first-class facilities throughout.
